Tennis Betting: Handicapping the 2010 Australian Open
There will be two different themes when The Australian Open begins in Melbourne Park Australia January 18, 2010.
On the men’s side the story will be the favorites. The defending champ is Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic are in the draw with the Andy’s: Murray and Roddick.
The women’s side is wide open. The Williams’ Sisters will be favorites along with U.S. Open champ Kim Clijsters, Serb Jelena Jankovic, and a strong Russian contingent.
The men’s draw is loaded with big names.
A fit and healthy Rafael Nadal will try and defend his title. Nadal wants to get his #1 ranking back and he feels nobody can stop him. He is 4-1 odds to win down under.
Roger Federer has a great game and a great attitude coming in the year’s first grand slam. He wants to solidify his #1 ranking. He too is 4-1 to win in Melbourne.
Novak Djokovic has won before in Australia, two years ago. This year he will be 8-1 to take the title.
Andy Murray has been putting in some hard training to prepare for Australia. The Brit has a shot at 8-1 odds.
Juan Martin Del Potro won The U.S. Open in September, Andy Roddick is coming off a knee injury. Both may be a little rusty at this point. Both go off at 20-1 odds.
Wildcards on on the men’s side would include Nikolay Davydenko, who has been playing well of late, hard serving American John Isner, and Australian Lleyton Hewitt all at 30-1 odds.
Like I said, the women’s side is wide open.
Venus and Serena Williams, when they are on their game, they can’t be beat. Both are 7-2 favorites.
Russian’s Svetlana Kuznetsova, Elena Dementieva, and Dinara Safina have all about the same chance of doing well in Melbourne. Each go off at 8-1 odds.
U.S. Open finalist Caroline Wozniacki is looking to stay hot in grand slam tournaments. The Dane will be 12-1 to win.
Two Belgian’s who are former #1 players will be forces to be reckoned with. Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin are back fulltime on the tour. We’ll see if they are ready for Australia. Both are 15-1 to win.
Others to watch will be Jelena Jankovic, Flavia Pennetta, Maria Sharapova, and Aussie local Sam Stosur, who will all be 25-1.
