Tennis Preview: the Monterrey Open

Coming up soon in the tennis world is the Monterrey Open International tournament. The Monterrey Open is a women’s tennis tournament and is played on hard courts. It is in association with the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) and is all a part of the WTA tour. The prize money is around $220,000 and is scheduled to have a draw of 36. The tournament begins on March 1st, and is usually held at the tennis club in Sierra Madre.

In 2009, the Monterrey Open was dominated by youngster Marion Bartoli. She beat out the unseeded Li, who knocked off the top seeded Agnieszka Radwanska early in the competition. Li took an early lead but Bartoli went on a spurt from there, winning eight of nine games. She hit some great shots and came away with her fourth career singles title on that tour.

This year looks to be just as promising of a tennis thriller as some of the most renowned professional womens players get ready to compete. We will likely see tennis stars such as Jelena Jankovich from Dubai, and Melanie Oudin from the U.S.A. Melanie made headlines last year as she played in last year’s US Open. She won the hearts of America with her fantastic play and after that year’s US Open she went from rank 70 to 44.
