Wimbledon: Championship matches

On July 3 and July 4, Wimbledon 2010 reached its climax as the champions of all divisions were crowned. The ladies and men’s singles championship matches were both one sided, as they were decided in straight sets.

Serena Williams defeated Russian Vera Zvonareva 6-3 6-2 in just over an hour. Serena was in total control the entire match, and Zvonareva didn’t pose any real threats. The Russian didn’t play her best tennis and admitted that she was disappointed with her own performance. Serena hit 29 winners and won an impressive 94 percent of her first serve points to claim her fourth Wimbledon title and thirteenth career Grand Slam.

Rafael Nadal defeated Tomas Berdych 6-3 7-5 6-4. It was a fairly competitive match but Nadal dominated most of the match, especially on the critical points. Nadal didn’t give Berdych any real opportunities to make it a close match. In fact, Berdych failed to convert four break points. Meanwhile, Nadal broke Berdych’s serve 4 times. Nadal played his usual defensive game, but also stepped up and hit some powerful shots when needed.

After 2 hours and 13 minutes Rafael Nadal finally won the match and claimed his second career Wimbledon title and eighth career Grand Slam. This was the second time Nadal has won the French Open and Wimbledon in the same year. In the press conference, Nadal expressed his joy for such an important victory. However, Berdych was very disappointed and felt like he had legitimate chances to win the match.

In the men’s doubles final, Jurgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner defeated Horia Tecau and Robert Lindstedt 6-1 7-5 7-5. This was the first ever Grand Slam title (singles or doubles) for Melzer and Petzschner. Vera Zvonareva didn’t have much luck in her doubles final match, teaming up with Elena Vesnina. American Vania King and Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan defeated Zvonareva and Vesnina 7-6(6) 6-2. Doubles specialists Leander Paes and Cara Black won the mixed doubles title 6-4 7-6(5) against Wesley Moodie and Lisa Raymond.
