Injuries Prevent the Williams Sisters From Playing at WTA Tennis Championships

For those who follow tennis, seeing Serena and Venus Williams at the WTA Championships is usually a given.

The sisters have both won season ending titles a short time ago; unfortunately neither sister appeared at the event last week due to injuries.

Serena received two operations on her right foot that she cut on a piece of glass and has been unable to play since Wimbledon. Venus has been reported as having a bad knee that has kept her out of competition. She has only been able to play in the U. S. Open. Both of the sisters have been featured prominently on billboards and tournament programs prior to this year’s competition.

Neither has stated that they’ll be retiring; however it has given other opponents an opportunity to step up and show the world their skills without being overshadowed by the sisters. Their lack of attendance has caused reduced media and fan interest.

The Williams sisters have been very successful in their careers, Serena is sixth in history having won 13 Grand Slam singles titles and Venus has won seven. Even though neither has played very much during 2010, the women both ranked in the top five during the WTA season. They were the only American women that were ranked in the top 50.

Captain Fernandez of the Fed Cup team has offered disappointment regarding the Williams sisters inability to play in the competition and stated that the team was looking forward to having them a part of the group.
