Fernando Gonzalez

Fernando Gonzalez is the 10th ranked player in the world in the ATP World Rankings. In 2010 Gonzalez has already enjoyed a significant amount of success, winning 14 matches and losing just 5 at this point on the season.

Last year Gonzalez won just one Singles Title the entire year. It is difficult to imagine a player that hopes to be one of the top ten players in the world without multiple singles titles in a year. Gonzalez has had success in his overall record on the season but has struggled as he has gotten to the final rounds of tournaments this year.

It seems that Gonzalez has all of the tools necessary to beat inferior players, but each time he gets to a point in the tournament where he plays the high level players, he struggles. Up to this point in the season Gonzalez has not beaten a single player that is ranked higher than he is in the ATP World Rankings. The lone bright spot in his matches against top players was his match against Andy Roddick.

In the Australian Open, Gonzalez played Andy Roddick in the 4th round. Gonzalez amazingly stretched the match to 5 sets against Roddick and looked excellent. This represents a lone bright spot against higher ranked players.

In another match against Robin Soderling, the 8th ranked player in the world, Gonzalez was beaten badly. In his first set he lost 0-6 and later dropped another set 2-6. If Gonzalez cannot gain some mental toughness while playing the world’s top players it will be difficult for him to climb any further in the rankings this year.
