Rafael Nadal

Rafael Nadal currently sits at 3rd in the rankings for Men’s Tennis in the ATP World Tour. Nadal recently surrendered the number 2 ranking in the world to Novak Djokovic. Though the 3rd ranking in the world seems stellar to most, this is a slight disappointment for Nadal.

Previously, Nadal was the number 1 player in the world and at just 23 years old he has the opportunity to return to the top of the game. So far in 2010 he has posted a 16-4 record. Though he has lost 3 matches this year, some of those matches have been to the top players in Men’s Tennis, such as Andy Murray and Nikolay Davydenko.

Nadal’s loss to Davydenko was a heartbreaker in the final of the ATP Qatar ExxonMobil Open. Nadal was dominated in the first set, losing 6-0. Nadal showed a lot of heart in the following set, winning 7-6. In the third set Nadal was not able to rebound and lost 4-6. Despite the loss, it was encouraging to see Nadal demonstrate the ability to adjust his game after being beaten thoroughly in the first set.

Despite dropping to the 3rd spot in the world, Nadal is still one of the top threats in tennis. In the past, Nadal was considered to be a clay court tennis player. He was thoroughly dominant on clay, beating his opponents at an incredible rate. Since that point Nadal has lost his reputation of being a clay court player. This is not because he is no longer solid on the clay, but rather because he is good on all courts.

Nadal is one of the most talented players in the game. I would be surprised if Nadal did not work his way back into the top 2 players in the world as the year continues on.
