Stanislas Wawrinka
To finish off the top 20 players in the ATP World Rankings we have Stanislas Wawrinka at the 20th position in the rankings. Stanislas Wawrinka recently jumped several spots in the rankings to join the top 20 following a Singles Title at the Grand Prix Hassan II.
In the championship match of the Grand Prix Hassan II Stanislas Wawrinka looked impressive. He won the championship match 6-2, 6-3 over Victor Hanescu of Romania.
Wawrinka is 12-4 on the year and has really won every single match that he has been the favorite to win all year. His 4 losses have come to Marin Cilic(twice), David Ferrer, and Mikhail Youzhny. Each of these players are ranked higher in the ATP Worl Standings that Wawrinka.
In some ways it is a positive thing to realize that Wawrinka has won all of the matches that he has been the favorite in, but in other ways there are negative connotations. In only winning the matches he is the favorite in, it is apparent that he may not be any better than the 20th player in the world currently. It is difficult to realize that you have hit your limit, but in losing to every player that is ranked higher than him, it is possible that Wawrinka simply does not belong any higher than 20th in the ATP World Rankings.
If Wawrinka hopes to prove that he is a better player than the 20th best in the world, he will need to prove it through victories over the world’s top level players. With so many wins over the players he is favored over, Wawrinka has the opportunity in almost every event to play the best players in the world.
The verdict is simple: Wawrinka needs to win matches against higher ranked players in order to move up. If this does not happen, I do not see Wawrinka moving up much further in the rankings.
