Aravane Rezai
The 20th position in the WTA World Rankings is filled by Aravane Rezai. Aravane Rezai is a 23 year old player out of France. She has been okay this year, producing a 10-9 record, but has not been anything special so far.
Last year Aravane Rezai had a career year, winning 43 matches and 2 singles titles. Despite her great play last year, she has failed to duplicate the play that has helped her get so high in the rankings so far in 2010.
In 2010 Aravane Rezai has been knocked out of tournaments seven times within the first 2 matches of her tournaments. This includes two times where she was knocked out in her first match of a tournament.
The greatest success for Aravane Rezai so far this year came at the WTA Medibank International. In this tournament Rezai managed to advance to the semifinals. En route to the semifinal Rezai defeated Flavia Pennetta, the 15th ranked player in the world, in impressive fashion. The result of her performance against Pennetta was a straight sets victory of 6-3, 6-0. Her run came to an end in the semifinal however, as she faced off against Serena Williams. She did manage to take the first set against Serena. She even forced the second set to go to a 5-7 finish. Unfortunately for Rezai, Williams was able to take the 3rd set.
Rezai will need more performances like the WTA Medibank International if she hopes to continue on in the 20th position of the WTA World Rankings. If she doesn’t, there are players such as Justine Henin that have been on fire and are just waiting for their opportunity to step up in the rankings.
