Maria Sharapova

Maria Sharapova is the 14th ranked player in the world in the WTA World Rankings. Sharapova is a former number 1 player in the world, but has had mixed results in her events in 2010.

Sharapova has had a series of problems with her shoulder and has not been quite the same player that she once was. Her serve used to be a powerful, useful part of her game. With her shoulder injury, her serve has not ever been quite the same. The same holds true for other parts of her game.

Maria Sharapova has only played in three tournaments so far in 2010. Of these three tournaments she has had varied results. She won a singles title at the WTA Regions Morgan Keegan Championships & The Cellular South Cup. In this tournament she breezed through without losing a single set. Her results at the Australian Open however were very different.

In the Australian Open Sharapova met Maria Kirilenko in her first match. Kirilenko was able to take the first set in a tie breaker. Sharapova responded with a solid 6-3 set. Kirilenko proved to be too strong that day though, as she upset Sharapova in the 3rd set with a score of 4-6.

It is difficult to know what to expect from Maria Sharapova at this point. She is one of the most talented players in the women’s tennis world, but her health issues have made her a different player in recent history. If Sharapova can overcome her injury there is no reason to believe that she wouldn’t rise towards the top of the rankings again.
