Nadia Petrova has had an interesting season to this point. She has not been a great player in most of the tournaments so far on the year, but in the Australian Open she played great tennis. She currently is the 18th ranked player in the WTA World Rankings.

Almost all of Petrova’s success on the year came in the Australian Open. In the Australian Open Petrova came across 10th ranked player Kim Clijsters. In her match against Clijsters she was absolutely dominant. She put together a beating that produced a 6-1, 6-0 victory over the current 10th ranked player.

In the following round Petrova took on Svetlana Kuznetsova. Svetlana Kuznetsova is the current number 5 player in the world. In her match against Svetlana Kuznetsova her great play continued. She was able to overtake Kuznetsova in a 3 set battle. Her great showing abruptly came to an end as she was beat in straight sets by Justine Henin in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open.

Outside of the Australian Open, Petrova has not looked great. She has won just 7 matches this year while losing 6. Four of her wins came in the Australian Open. Outside of the Australian Open her record is just 3-5 on the year.

Petrova has been beaten in the first round 3 times already on the season. Besides these 3 first round defeats she has also lost in her second match of a tournament another time. If she doesn’t find consistency, you can expect Petrova to drop out of the top 20 as time moves on.
